Coach Juan's Corner
Hello PSA Family,

We're only 7 short weeks away from school being out and the summer fun getting started. I know everyone is planning to spend A LOT of time around the pool this summer so it's time to review the Safer 3 program we promote.

Safer Kids
Employ constant adult supervision and swim skill attainment through on-going qualified instruction. Learn proper behavior in and around the water.

Pools and natural bodies of water
•Always assign an adult "Water-Watcher" who is able to swim. Children should never be left in or near a pool or body of water unattended, not even for a minute.
•The Water-Watcher should never be distracted by another activity like cooking, reading or gardening while children are in or near the pool.
•Do not rely on floatation devices. A child can easily slip out of them or even remove them.
•Children and adults alike should learn to swim and maintain these skills year-round.
•A child should never be considered or treated as "water-safe". This can cause a false sense of security and lack of supervision.

Behavior in, on and around the water
•Teach children and Water-Watchers the pool rules and appropriate behavior to be used in and around a pool. Post and obey all pool rules.
•When boating or activities in open water follow guidelines for use of Coast Guard approved PFD's (Personal Flotation Devices).
•Become familiar and follow safety rules and guidelines at beaches, lakes and rivers.
•Know your abilities and your limitations and those of your children.

Safer Water
Install, maintain and utilize proper fencing, gates, gate latches, alarms and other safety equipment around the pool.

Around the house

•Never leave young children unattended in a bathtub, even for a few seconds.
•Do not leave young children unattended around other containers of water (such as buckets or toilets). Children can drown in just a few inches of water.
•If you have very young children, install locks on toilets.

Backyard pool or spa
•Fences should be at least five feet high, separating the pool from the residence.
•The area surrounding the fence should be clear of objects that could aid a child in climbing over.
•Gates should be self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be installed at the top of the gate, out of the reach of children.
•Gates should never be propped open.
•Every door and window allowing pool access should be locked at all times.
•Additional layers of protection include: safety covers, gate alarms, door alarms, and motion-detection devices.

Ocean, lakes and other bodies of water
•Do not allow children to dive head-first into natural bodies of water or shallow swimming pools.
•Do not allow children to swim in the area where waves break. The waves are very powerful and can knock a child over or drag them under water.
•Teach your child what to do if they caught in a rip current: Swim parallel with the shore until you are out of the current, then swim toward land.

Safer Response
•Learn CPR, first aid, and rescue techniques. Keep an emergency action plan and phone by the pool at all times.
•Always be ready for an emergency.
•Prepare and share an emergency action plan.
•Adults, caretakers and children should learn CPR, first aid and rescue techniques.
•Keep rescue equipment such as a shepherd's hook, life-saving ring and CPR sign mounted by the pool.
•Become familiar with methods to help remove a victim from the water.
•Post and know all emergency numbers such as 911.
•Have a phone next to the pool to call 911 in case of an emergency and to prevent the Water-Watcher from leaving the pool area to answer a phone call.

PSA Summer Swim Team
The Pearland Swim Academy is proud to announce our new Summer Swim Team. The goal of the PSA Summer Swim Team is to provide an introduction to the swim team environment and prepare swimmers for placement on local swim teams. Coach Juan and the rest of the PSA staff are excited to get the new program going. Over the last 8 years Coach Juan has started 2 other successful swim teams in Pearland: The Pearland Pirates (summer swim team) and Pearland Aquatics (PEAK is a year round USA Swimming Team.) He looks forward to a great time with this new team. The PSA Summer Swim Team will focus on developing all four competitive strokes, turns, and individual self confidence through team swimming. The PSA Summer Swim Team will also expose swimmers to friendly competition. PSA will host small swim meets against local summer swim teams where swimmers can have a great time cheering on their teammates. To participate in this program current PSA swimmers must be in Water Stars or Water Racer groups. Swimmers not currently enrolled with PSA may request an evaluation for placement on our team. These swimmers must be able to swim the length of our pool freestyle and backstroke and must know how to kick butterfly. Swimmers may join the team at any point throughout the summer as long as we have spots available. Swim Team practice sessions will last 45 minutes. The swimmers will be subdivided by age and ability. Participants will need goggles, a cap (for swimmers with long hair), swim suit (one piece for girls), and a love for the water. All participants will receive a PSA water bottle. Come spend a fun-filled summer with Coach Juan and the rest of the PSA coaching staff. Click here for more information on the PSA Summer Swim Team

Body Blast
Our Body Blast class is for a parent and child to enjoy together. The focus of the class is exercise for the parent and water adjustment for the child. Parents will benefit from the conditioning cardio water exercise and children will gain confidence by spending time in the water with the security of being with their parent. Our Body Blast program welcomes all students and will offer intensity level variations based on individual experience and ability levels. Students must be able to independently use the steps to enter and exit the deck area and independently use the steps to enter and exit the pool. Strong swimming skills are not required. Click here for more information about our Body Blast Program.

Birthday Parties

Consider Pearland Swim Academy for your child's next birthday party. PSA Will provide a 2 hour party with up to 15 guests and use of the swimming pool area and a party area. See our Party Rental Contract for rental agreement information and party pricing details.

Happy Birthday
PSA would like to say Happy Birthday to our swimmers who were born in April.
