Pearland Swim Academy Newsletter - July and August 2010

Coach Juan's Corner
Hello PSA Family,

Protecting Your Invenstment
With the Fall season approaching quickly I would like to remind all parents to protect their Summer investments by encouraging you to keep your children enrolled during the Fall and Winter seasons. We've all seen first hand how children can become rusty over the summer with what they learned during the school year. The same goes with learning how to swim. If your child only comes for the Summer, it's harder for them to progress and maintain their technique and what they learned throughout the rest of the year.

Back to School
The new school year is also upon us. We want to inform you in advance that some of our coaches that may teach your children will be starting or going back to college and will not be here for the rest of this year. We apologize if this causes any inconvenience and we understand that some of you have a preference of which coach is instructing your child. However, sometimes a change from the norm can be a positive and refreshing transition into another instructors teaching style. Though we have a strict curriculum that all coaches abide by, some students may favor a specific coach and we'll do our best to accomadate all requests. In the meantime, let's wish our coaches and lifeguards who are leaving for school a good luck and congratulations until we see them again next summer.

Online Registration
Pearland Swim Academy is taking a huge step toward the modern digital age by offering on-line registration. The next time you visit www.ISwimPSA.com, you will be able to create your own account, register and pay for classes, check your child's progress, and give and receive feed back from your child's coach. This is a project that Pam and Jason have been working on since the Spring and I am very proud of them for pulling this together. We hope you will appreciate our new and improved website as much as we do. Of course, our staff will still be available at the front desk to help with any phone calls, e-mails, or walk-ins. Don't forget, the Fall season is right around the corner so take advantage of this new and exciting feature and reserve your spot soon. Feel free to check it out now, but not until you read about Coach Alex.

Coach Spotlight - Alexandria Charles
Coach Alex has been swimming all her life. Because her mom was afraid of the water, she didn't want Alex to have the same fear, so Alex began taking swim lessons when she was six months old. At age 9, her mom encouraged her to try swimming for a sport by joining the Silverlake Swim team (which is now the Pearland Pirates). This is where she first met Coach Juan.

Alex tells the story this way: "As a nine year old, I was terrified of Coach Juan until my first meet. I had a really hard time finishing my first event which was 50 yard freestyle. After the race, Coach Juan called me over to talk to him. I was embarrassed for swimming so slow, but he told me, 'You did awesome and I can't wait to see you win at the next race'. I went on to do 3 more years with the Pearland Pirates and loved every minute of being taught by Coach Juan."

Alex went on to join the Pearland High School Aquatics team and found her love for water polo. She later transferred to Glenda Dawson High School where she became the captain of the water polo team for her Junior and Senior year. "I love the water and love teaching others about something I am passionate about. Swimming has taught me that I can do anything that I set my mind to and to always do my best. Attitude is everything."

Her love for teaching goes beyond swimming. As an active Girl Scout, Alex loves mentoring girls. She enjoys riding horses and has served as a program aid to the South Texas Riders Association where she teaches horsemanship to girls. She has also been a counselor for the Good News Day Camp. "What else can I say, I love teaching, I love swimming, and I love kids!"

We will miss Coach Alex as she will soon be going to college at Texas Christian University. She plans on majoring in Biology and Pre-Med. The next time you see her, wish her the best. We know she will be successful in anything she chooses to do.
