Pearland Swim Academy Newsletter - May 2010

Coach Juan's Corner
Hello PSA Family,

Here at PSA, we understand the importance of safety. Starting next month, we will begin a new and exciting program for those interested in becoming CPR, First Aid, and AED certified. Something as little as a five hour class offers a person the potential to save a life in any given emergency situation. PSA has made these classes readily available for the community, or school or workplace. I know that we can help spread safety awareness through this community, the Greater Houston Area, and beyond.

Our first class will meet Saturday, June 5th, 1:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M.
There will be a maximum of 12 students per class so register quick before spots fill up.

We look forward to keeping Pearland safe with you.

Coach Spotlight - Brett Yancey
The reason our customers choose Pearland Swim Academy, is our staff, and one of our most popular coaches is Brett Yancey. He has led a very interesting and challenging life and we feel very fortunate to have him on our team teaching your kids.

Brett grew up in South Shore Harbor in League City, Texas where he would spend every waking day during some very hot summers at his community outdoor pool. He has always been an avid swimmer. When he was 12, his family moved to Bellingham, Washington where he discovered an outdoor paradise that exposed him to mountain climbing, kayaking, hunting, whale watching, cliff diving, hiking, camping, river rafting, skiing, snowboarding and fishing for very large Salmon. But these distractions were not enough to take away his love for swimming.

Soon after he turned 16, his family moved from the wilderness of Washington State to the concrete jungle of a suburb of Chicago, more specifically Naperville, Illinois. His walks around Lake Superior eventually turned into walks down city streets laden with sky-scrapers and huge steel sculptures. He reflects fondly on the diverse cultures there, his friends, and authentic Chicago-style deep dish pizza. He was able to graduate high school early and moved back to Texas to start attending classes at San Jacinto College and University of Houston.

About five years ago, his life changed from being a physically active young man who could dunk a basketball and walk on his hands to one with severely limited mobility. He suffered a very bad hernia on his L4/S1 disc that was pinching the psiatic nerve in his leg. Unable to sit up in class or walk short distances, Brett spent about a year and a half in bed 24 hours a day while his doctors searched for a solution. After exhausting all other options, the ultimate cure was back surgery that removed a small piece of bone that was putting pressure on the nerves to his leg.

It worked! But it did not take long for him to realize he would be living with some very real physical limitations on his life. So he returned to the place he loved the most, which just so happens to be the place that takes 90% of the weight of his back: The pool.

His first job was working with kids. At 13, living in Washington, he worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Ferndale officiating youth sports leagues. While in Naperville, he worked as a lifeguard and taught swim lessons at the YMCA. He also assisted in coaching the swim team and had the opportunity to meet Olympic Bronze Medalist (For Australia) Ross Seymour.

Brett has worked with every type of student imaginable, including a 65-year old who bucket list included learning to swim, and a 16-year old future volleyball star recovering from a leg injury, but his real passion is working with kids with special needs.

Having been trained to deliver CPR as both a laymen and a professional responder, it was only natural for him to become certified to teach CPR, which will be done periodically PSA.

When you see him next, be sure to ask him about hunting bucks with Ted Nugent.

PSA will be closed Saturday, May 29th - Monday, May 31st in honor of Memorial Day and will not be having lessons. Classes and business hours will resume as normal on Tuesday, June 1st. Click here to see more of our 2010 Holiday Schedule.

PSA Summer Swim Team

The Pearland Swim Academy is proud to announce our new Summer Swim Team. The goal of the PSA Summer Swim Team is to provide an introduction to the swim team environment and prepare swimmers for placement on local swim teams. Coach Juan and the rest of the PSA staff are excited to get the new program going. Over the last 8 years Coach Juan has started 2 other successful swim teams in Pearland: The Pearland Pirates (summer swim team) and Pearland Aquatics (PEAK is a year round USA Swimming Team.) He looks forward to a great time with this new team. The PSA Summer Swim Team will focus on developing all four competitive strokes, turns, and individual self confidence through team swimming. The PSA Summer Swim Team will also expose swimmers to friendly competition. PSA will host small swim meets against local summer swim teams where swimmers can have a great time cheering on their teammates. To participate in this program current PSA swimmers must be in Water Stars or Water Racer groups. Swimmers not currently enrolled with PSA may request an evaluation for placement on our team. These swimmers must be able to swim the length of our pool freestyle and backstroke and must know how to kick butterfly. Swimmers may join the team at any point throughout the summer as long as we have spots available. Swim Team practice sessions will last 45 minutes. The swimmers will be subdivided by age and ability. Participants will need goggles, a cap (for swimmers with long hair), swim suit (one piece for girls), and a love for the water. All participants will receive a PSA water bottle. Come spend a fun-filled summer with Coach Juan and the rest of the PSA coaching staff. Click here for more information on the PSA Summer Swim Team
